GROZNY, February 9 (RIA Novosti) - A police officer and a militant were killed and two police officers injured in a shootout in the south of Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya on Monday, a local police source said.
"An encounter with a militant group occurred in a wooded area near the village of Dargo on Monday afternoon. One police officer was killed and two injured in the ensuing shootout. One militant was also killed. He is being identified," a police source said.
Police are searching for the other militants from the group, he said.
Chechnya saw two brutal separatist wars in the 1990s and early 2000s. Militant attacks remain fairly common in the troubled republic.
