Andrei Razin was a member of the Soviet Union's first pop-disco group in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band, whose name translates as Tender May, was massively successful throughout the country with hits such as Belye Rozi (White Roses) and Rozovy Vechyer (Rose Evening).
"Andrei Razin has been registered as a candidate for the post of mayor in the resort town of Kislovodsk," the representative said.
Razin is an MP in the North Caucasus' Stavropol Territory parliament and a member of the LDPR party.
Early elections, due on May 31, were announced after the city's mayor was charged with abuse of office in January. Vitaly Biryukov had been on the run for six months before handing himself in to police.
A Stavropol Territory native, Razin was working on a collective farm in 1988 when he was sent to Moscow with money to buy a tractor. He decided to stay in the capital, and found work at the SPM music studio. Responsible for seeking out new talent, he discovered the fledgling Laskovy Mai and soon became their manager and singer. The group split up in 1992.
