Shakir Tlekhusezh studied at the Kuban Agrarian University in Krasnodar, but was told to leave in 2005 after failing exams. The man, filled with shame, concealed his dismissal from his parents and pretended to be continuing his studies. Eventually he told them he had graduated.
Investigators said that when his parents began to demand that he show them his degree certificate, he began to hate them, and eventually killed them to avoid having to come clean on his deception.
According to investigators, Shakir fatally stabbed both parents in the early hours of August 18 last year. His grandmother died of a heart attack on discovering the bodies later that morning.
"After this, Tlekhusezh took the bodies of the family members to a forest... and pretended his family had mysteriously disappeared," prosecutors said.
The man faces life in prison if found guilty.
