RIO DE JANEIRO, April 14 (RIA Novosti) - A woman survived an armed robbery on a bus in northeast Brazil, after a wad of banknotes she was hiding in her bra stopped a bullet from reaching her heart, local media said on Tuesday.
Ivonete Pereira de Oliveira, 58, was on a bus in the Brazilian state of Bahia traveling to the town of Lauro de Freitas on Saturday, when two robbers attacked the vehicle.
When a police officer arrived at the scene, the attackers began to shoot. The officer was killed, and a stray bullet hit the woman's chest. The banknotes dulled the impact, preventing a fatal injury.
Ivonete said she had hidden 150 Brazil reals ($70) in 10 and 20 bills in her garment, due to the high level of crime in the area. According to police, up to five armed attacks on buses take place in the state every day.
The woman was hospitalized and the bullet was removed by surgeons. The robbers escaped the crime scene, but one was shot in the leg.
