CAIRO, April 24 (RIA Novosti) - A 34-year-old woman has become the latest person to be diagnosed with bird flu in Egypt, a health ministry official said on Friday.

The woman from the Gharbiya Province, north of Cairo, is reported to be in a stable condition in hospital.

The latest case follows the deaths of two Egyptians this week. A woman died of respiratory failure on Wednesday and a six-year-old boy on Tuesday.

Egypt's first recorded bird flu in 2006 and since then 68 people have contracted the disease with some 25 cases proving fatal.

The Egyptian authorities have said that the African country has seen a rise in bird flu cases, particularly among young children under three. The World Health Organization has called for a study of Egypt's bird flu cases to see if there is any pattern.

As of April 21, a total of 420 bird flu cases have been registered worldwide since the virus was first detected in 2003, resulting in 257 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.

Although there have been no incidences of human-to-human infection, experts fear that the bird flu virus may mutate into a form that could be easily transmitted from person to person, causing a global pandemic.
