MOSCOW, April 30 (RIA Novosti) - Police have arrested three men attempting to sell over 1.2 kg (2.6 lbs) of emeralds worth over 26.8 million rubles ($820,000) near Moscow, a police source said on Thursday.
"In a cafe the village of Pokrov, in the Moscow Region's Podolsk district, police officers detained three unemployed men, one of them a Ukrainian national, who were attempting to sell natural emerald crystals worth over 26.8 million rubles," the source said.
The men were unable to prove their ownership of the stones. Investigators are working to establish how the men got hold of such a large volume of emeralds.
