TBILISI, May 8 (RIA Novosti) - Georgian police have detained 27 medics across the country suspected of involvement in illegally selling babies, the Interior Ministry said on Friday.
The network, including 14 members of an organized criminal group, had two parts, with the first seeking out suitable pregnant women and the second taking care of the births and subsequent sale of the newborns.
The suspects include Teimuraz Lortkipanidze, the chief doctor at the Tskhaltubo maternity house in west-central Georgia, and Amiran Lomtadze, an anesthetist at a children's hospital in Georgia's second-largest city of Kutaisi.
No other details, including the number of babies sold, have been disclosed.
