MADRID, May 17 (RIA Novosti) - World No. 1 Dinara Safina beat Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark to win the Madrid Open women's singles title on Sunday.
Safina, who took top spot in the Women's Tennis Association rankings last month, won in straight sets, 6-2 6-4, to clinch her second title of the season.
Twenty-three-year-old Safina, who became the 19th player to head the WTA list since the introduction of computer rankings in 1975, will play next at the French Open, which starts on May 24.
The Madrid Open has a prize pool of 3.5 million euros ($4.7 million).
