MADRID, June 8 (RIA Novosti) - Gabonese President Omar Bongo died on Monday in a clinic in Barcelona, Spanish media said citing sources close to the president.
According to the report, the Gabonese leader died at approximately 10:00 GMT on Monday at the Quiron hospital, where he was hospitalized in early May. According to unconfirmed reports, the 73-year-old leader was being treated for bowel cancer.
Early on Monday AFP reported the president's death, citing a French source. However, Gabonese Prime Minister Jean Eyeghe Ndong said later in the day that the president, who ruled Gabon from 1967, was alive.
