MADRID, June 19 (RIA Novosti) - Spanish authorities are blaming the Basque separatist group ETA for the death of a police officer in a bomb attack in the north of the country, the EFE news agency reported on Friday.
The incident took place in the Basque town of Arrigorriaga. The explosive device was mounted underneath police inspector Eduardo Cuelles Garcia's car and went off when he started the engine.
ETA, listed as a terrorist organization by Spain, France, the United States and the European Union, has been fighting for an independent Basque state in northern Spain and southwestern France for nearly half a century.
Since 1968, ETA has been blamed for the deaths of more than 800 people.
