NEW YORK, July 22 (RIA Novosti) - A civic group working to cut the spread of cancer in the United States has initiated a suit against the makers of hot dogs, the iconic food of the American summer, local radio reported on Wednesday.
According to 1010-WINS radio station, the nongovernmental organization Cancer Project initiated the suit in Newark, New Jersey, on the behalf of three of the state's residents against four of the largest hot dog producers.
The suit cites the American Institute for Cancer Research, which recently reported that the regular ingestion of meat used in hot dogs increases the risk of intestinal and other forms of cancer.
The suit states that the meat in hot dogs is a health threat and demands hot dog producers place warning labels on their products.
Hot dogs have long been a symbol of the American summer, with hot dog eating contests common during Independence Day festivities, and have always been a must at baseball and softball games.
