MAKHACHKALA, August 13 (RIA Novosti) - Six people, four police and two civilians, were killed in an attack on a police post in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan on Thursday, a local Interior Ministry official said.
"Unidentified gunmen with automatic weapons opened fire at a police post killing four officers. Two women who worked at a nearby sauna also came under fire, they died at the scene," the official said.
He said the attack occurred near the Caspian Sea town of Buinaksk at about 9:30 p.m. Moscow time (17:30 GMT). Investigators are working at the scene, he added.
Dagestan and Russia's other North Caucasus regions neighboring Chechnya have been destabilized by frequent militant attacks on police and other officials.
Also in Dagestan on Thursday, a police car came under fire in the capital, Makhachkala, although no one hurt, while two police officers were wounded in separate sniper attacks in the city.
In the past month, Chechnya has seen the abductions and killings of three prominent human rights activists, one in mid-July and two earlier this week.
