SOCHI, August 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russia backs a German initiative to draft an economic charter to overcome the ongoing global economic crisis, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday.

"Russia has always supported a number of initiatives, including Germany's proposal [to draft] an economic charter. We believe this is solid material that could become the basis for future work," Medvedev said after talks with the German leader, Angela Merkel, at his Black Sea residence in Sochi.

Merkel first voiced the idea to draft a global charter "for sustainable economic governance" at a meeting in February with heads of major international organizations, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Trade Organization (WTO) and World Bank (WB).

The Russian leader proposed continuing economic talks ahead of a third G20 summit planned for September in Pittsburg.

The first G20 summit took place in November last year in Washington. The main outcome of the second G20 summit held in London in April was a decision to allocate $5 trillion over 1.5 years to fight the global economic problems, with a fifth of the sum to go to the International Monetary Fund.

Medvedev also urged that decisions made during past summits should be implemented.
