MAKHACHKALA, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - An officer was wounded in a new bold attack on a police post in the center of Dagestan's capital on Saturday, police in the southern Russian republic said.
A total of 13 people, six police and seven civilians, were killed in three separate attacks on police posts and a nearby health center in the volatile North Caucasus republic earlier this week.
"A police officer was wounded when gunmen opened fire at a police post near Makhachkala's central square, home to the Interior Ministry and administrative buildings" a police spokesman said, adding the officer was undergoing an operation in hospital.
Dagestan, which neighbors Chechnya, has seen an upsurge in militant violence in recent months, with attacks on police, other officials and federal forces being a regular occurrence. In June, Dagestan's interior minister was assassinated at a wedding reception.
