MOSCOW, August 17 (RIA Novosti) - The conservation of the Saiga antelope, which faces extinction, will be discussed during the XXIX International Union of Game Biologists Congress.
The congress opened in Moscow on Monday.
“The dramatic reduction of a livestock capita from 1992 across the post-Soviet territory, increased hunting of the Saiga antelope as a source of meat,” a spokesman for the Russian committee of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme said.
“The smuggling of Saiga horns has also increased in recent years, as the state monopoly on the international horn trade was curtailed,” Valery Neronov added.
The Saiga population has suffered heavily as a result of poaching and wide-scale hunting. According to estimates, the European population of the Saiga numbers from 15,000 to 19,000, while there were about 800,000 in the 1950s.
The IUGB Congress, intended to draw attention to numerous global problems in the field of wildlife biology, has taken place every two years in different European countries since 1954.  The XXIX IUGB Congress, initiated and organized by Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture, will take place in Moscow’s World Trade Center on August 17 - 22.
