ATHENS, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - Greek firefighters have successfully fought a number of wildfires across the country, with only one "active front" remaining, a spokesperson for the fire services said on Tuesday.
"An active fire front still remains in the island of Euboea, near the town of Karistos. The fire is burning high in the mountains and is being extinguished using aircraft, with two airplanes and two helicopters involved", the spokesperson said.
She added firefighters continued to fight new outbreaks which occurred from time to time in a vast area to the northeast of Athens, where fires had been earlier extinguished.
The fires in Greece's central prefecture of Boeotia, in the island of Zante in the Ionian Sea and in the island of Skyros in the Aegean Sea were successfully put out on Monday evening and overnight, the spokesperson said.
More than 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) of forest and some 150 houses have burnt over August 22-24, mostly in Greece's central part of Attica. Thousands of residents have been evacuated, but no deaths have been reported.
France, Italy and Cyprus have sent airplanes and helicopters to help Greece fight the wildfires. Russia has also promised to send its two largest firefighting airplanes to Greece - an Il-76 (Candid) and Be-200 (Altair).
