The fire began at 5:05 a.m. Moscow time and spread to over 3,000 square meters by 9:00 p.m. A team of 88 firefighters from the Emergencies Ministry used 20 special vehicles to extinguish the fire.
The fire began at Tank #7 of the Kanda station with a capacity of 20,000 cubic meters of crude. It subsequently spread to Tanks ##5 and 8, and then to two more reservoirs.
As of 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, the firefighters were still trying to put out the fire at one of the tanks, while three other tanks had burned out.

In the morning of August 24, the firefighters extinguished a fire at the tank that was still intact, but a small fire was still licking at one of the other tanks.
A criminal case has been initiated under Article 217 of the Russian Criminal Code that stipulates punishment for violating safety rules at facilities where there is a danger of explosion resulting in the deaths of two or more persons, the Investigation Committee of the Prosecutor General’s Office said on August 24.
