WASHINGTON, August 27 (RIA Novosti) - U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, who lost his battle with brain cancer Wednesday, is to be buried on Saturday at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia near to his slain brothers Robert and John.
Edward Kennedy, 77, who was diagnosed with a malignant tumor last May, was a prominent figure in U.S. politics for almost half a century, serving as a senator from 1962 and was also an army veteran giving him the right to burial at Arlington.
Kennedy is due to lie in repose in Boston with the funeral mass scheduled for Saturday followed by burial at Arlington. U.S. President Barack Obama is to deliver a eulogy at the funeral service to be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica in Boston.
Obama instructed all flags to be flown at half mast at the White House and across the country as a mark of respect for Kennedy who endorsed him in his Democratic Party nomination.
"As a mark of respect for the memory of Senator Edward M Kennedy, I hereby order... That the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds," Obama's proclamation read.
