NEW YORK, September 4 (RIA Novosti) - World No. 1 Dinara Safina of Russia said she would do everything possible to win coming matches in straight sets only.
Safina had to overcome her own nerves and service problems at the U.S. Open in New York to beat on Thursday Germany's Kristina Barrois 6:7, 6:2, 6:3 in a match that lasted 2 hours and 13 minutes to reach the third round.
"I don't want to play three sets, obviously... I just have to be more disciplined. I will work on it and we'll make sure it's going to be two sets," the official U.S. Open website quoted Safina as saying at a news conference.
However, the top-seed said that that she played much better against Barrois in comparison with her Tuesday's match.
On Tuesday Safina played Olivia Rogowska from Australia, ranked 167 in the world, for 2 hours 35 minutes to finally beat the 18-year-old opponent 6:7, 6:2, 6:4.
In April this year, Safina became the second Russian to top the global women's tennis ranking after Maria Sharapova. The 23-year-old Russian is the 19th player to head the WTA list since the introduction of computer rankings in 1975.
