NEW YORK, September 6 (RIA Novosti) - World No. 1 Dinara Safina of Russia was beaten by Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5) in the third round of the U.S. Open.
Russia's top-seed said after the match she knew how to defeat Kvitova but failed to carry through her strategy due to psychological overstrain.
In April this year, Safina became the second Russian to top the global women's tennis ranking after Maria Sharapova. The 23-year-old Russian is the 19th player to head the WTA list since the introduction of computer rankings in 1975.
