KHABAROVSK, September 9 (RIA Novosti) - Cooperation between Russia and South Korea in ship-building and the space industry should be intensified, the Russian president’s envoy to the Russian Far East said on Wednesday.
“The rapid development of the oil and gas industry in Russia requires the availability of modern ships - oil tankers and gas transporting vessels. Russia has no experience in the construction of ships of this class, while the Republic of Korea has enormous experience in their construction,” Viktor Ishayev said at a meeting with the South Korean ambassador to Russia.
The committee for the Far East and Siberia of the Russian-Korean joint commission for economic, scientific and technical cooperation is currently holding its fifth session. The meeting was organized as part of the Far East international economic forum.
Ishayev invited Korean companies to take part in the construction of the Vostochny space center in Russia’s Far East.
South Korean companies currently dominate world shipbuilding. The largest companies in the sector are Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.
