WASHINGTON, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - Thousands of people took part in a demonstration in Washington on Saturday, protesting against U.S. President Barack Obama's economic policy, RIA Novosti correspondent reported.
Washington residents and protesters from other U.S. regions marched along central Pennsylvania avenue to the U.S. Congress building. The FreedomWorks organization, fighting for tax cuts and against government interference in the economy, took the lead in the demonstration, supported by many other public organizations.
"I do not understand why my family has to put its hardly earned money into saving of some automobile companies or into the health reform, if it will cost us more that we pay now for medical insurance," one of the protesters said.
The protesters are carrying posters, which say "Obama's care makes me sick", "I am not your bank machine", and scream out slogans against the U.S. president, Speaker of the States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner.
The demonstrarion in Washington completes a bus protest tour across 34 U.S. cities and towns, which started in late August in California's capital of Sacramento. The action is called the Tea Party Movement, intended to remind the Boston Tea Party in 1773, held by colonists in Boston, in the British colony of Massachusetts.
On December 16, 1773, after officials in Boston refused to return three shiploads of taxed tea to Britain, a group of colonists boarded the ships and destroyed the tea by throwing it into Boston Harbor. The incident has often been referenced in tax connected political protests.
