MOSCOW, September 18 (RIA Novosti) - More than 4,000 people have died from swine flu worldwide, with the total number of officially confirmed cases reaching 295,000, Russia's consumer watchdog said on Friday citing a World Health Organization report.
"The total number of laboratory-confirmed human cases of the A/H1N1 infection stands at 294,663 including 4,041 deaths worldwide," Rospotrebnadzor said in a statement.
As of September 17, there have been 372 registered cases of swine flu in Russia, mainly among those returning home from foreign trips, Rospotrebnadzor said. There have been no reported deaths.
Russian sanitary officials are continuing to check flights arriving in the country from destinations with confirmed cases of swine flu.
The watchdog said 1,067 people displaying flu symptoms were recorded during airport checks. All of them received medical treatment, including 932 who were hospitalized for further tests.
