Over 3,000 representatives of minority indigenous peoples, including the Nivkhs, the Ulcha (Oroks), the Evenks and the Nanai, live on Sakhalin Island. It would be an irretrievable loss if even a single element of their unique culture were to disappear.

Vladimir Sangi is a classic Nivkh writer. His novels and short stories have become part of local literary heritage. Sangi created the Nivkh alphabet and wrote the first alphabet book, and has authored numerous books for children, as well as articles for the media and research papers.
