GROZNY, October 27 (RIA Novosti) - One police officer was killed and another injured while attempting to detain an armed militant who blew himself up Tuesday on one of Grozny's main squares, Chechnya's Interior Minister said.
Police authorities received operative information on the militant's movement in the volatile North Caucus republic's capital in Russia's south and attempted to detain him but were met with resistance by the armed man.
"The militant was injured in the attempt to detain him and he detonated a grenade, blowing himself up," Ruslan Alkhanov said, adding that one police officer was killed and another injured in the incident.
The episode occurred on Journalist Square in the center of the capital, where many people gather in the evening for coffee, tea and ice-cream.
The militant was identified as Ibragim Kasumov, 24, a resident of Grozny.
Alkhanov said no civilians were injured during the event.
