VLADIKAVKAZ, October 31 (RIA Novosti) - A police officer was killed and two other people wounded in a shooting in Russia's volatile southern region on Saturday, a police official in North Ossetia said.
The officer was killed after approaching a car for a document check at a police post in Mozdok, on the republic's border with Chechnya. Another officer and a civilian were wounded when people in the car opened fire.
Later reports said police returned fire killing the three gunmen in the car.
Russia's mainly Muslim republics in the North Caucasus have seen a surge of militant violence recently, with skirmishes, attacks on police and officials have been reported daily.
