MOSCOW, November 10 (RIA Novosti) - John Allen Muhammad, convicted of a series of sniper attacks around Washington DC in 2002, will be put to death by lethal injection on Tuesday evening in Virginia, the local governor said.

Tim Kaine said in a statement that he would not overrule an earlier court sentence and grant clemency.

"Having carefully reviewed the petition for clemency and judicial opinions regarding this case, I find no compelling reason to set aside the sentence that was recommended by the jury and then imposed and affirmed by the courts... Accordingly, I decline to intervene," he said.

Muhammad, 48, who along with an accomplice killed 10 people over a three-week period, will be executed at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt.

His defense lawyers had asked Gov. Kaine to commute the sentence to life in prison, due to his mental illness. The final appeal was turned down by the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday.

The accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, who was 17 at the time of the killings, is serving a life prison term.

Muhammad's legal team said the ex-serviceman suffered from Gulf War Syndrome, and has been diagnosed with several mental disorders.

The death sentence was handed down for the killing of Dean Harold Meyers at a gas station.

The victims were each killed with a single bullet fired from a sniper rifle through a hole in the trunk of a car driven by the men.
