Four people were killed and another 40 injured when militants fired three rockets into a crowded marketplace in central Afghanistan on Monday, local police said.
The attack occurred in the Kapisa province 70 km northwest of Kabul. Matyullah Safi said the rockets were Chinese-made.
The attack is believed to have been timed to coincide with a meeting between French soldiers and local elders taking place in the area.
The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan has said no foreign personnel were injured.
