New houses, schools and streetcars: Nizhny Novgorod’s answer to the financial crisis

The global financial crisis has caused many problems for Nizhny Novgorod and other Russian industrial centers. But the city’s mayor, Vadim Bulavinov, believes the crisis should release city authorities from their obligations. And this is not just words: The city has allocated funds for the construction of five new residential buildings to relocate people from dilapidated houses

For the first time over the past few years, the construction of three new schools has been financed from the budget.

Authorities have also focused on providing activities for the youth: over 6,000 teenagers have received summer jobs.

145,000 schoolchildren attended various summer camps.

60 courtyard athletic grounds have been built in Nizhny Novgorod in the past three years.

New playgrounds for children are being constructed.

There is a growing need for playgrounds. Since 2007, there has been a substantial rise in births.

To meet the growing demand in kindergartens, authorities have been establishing additional kindergarten groups.

Nizhny Novgorod Mayor Vadim Bulavinov opened the city’s largest children’s health clinic.

In 2010, the title of Honorary Veteran will be awarded to 65 Great Patriotic War veterans.

New streetcars and buses have appeared on Nizhny Novgorod’s streets.
