A Ghost Forest of the stumps of 10 African rainforest trees was placed around Trafalgar Square in central London on November 16. 18.11.2009, Sputnik International
The art exhibit features tree stumps from the Suhum forest reserve, a commercially logged tropical forest in southeastern Ghana, a country that has lost 90% of its rainforest in the past 50 years.
The stumps chosen by Palmer were cleaned and shipped to Britain for installation on white mounts in Trafalgar Square, between Nelson’s Column and the National Gallery.
The environmental installation gets the attention of passers-by and tourists, who photograph the stumps. Many stop to read about the project and the dangers of deforestation in Africa and other regions.
The stumps look especially good against the backdrop of London’s sights at sunset. At night, green laser beams shine upwards to mark the height the trees had they still been alive.
After the exhibition in London, the Ghost Forest installation will be moved on Friday to Thorvaldsen Square in Copenhagen, Denmark, in time for the UN Climate Change Conference.
