Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has proposed to strip the country's president of his veto right as part of constitutional reforms intended to resolve a "political conflict" in the country.

WARSAW, November 22 (RIA Novosti) - Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has proposed to strip the country's president of his veto right as part of constitutional reforms intended to resolve a "political conflict" in the country.

"I want to propose changes [to the Constitution], which would restrict the temperature and the level of the political conflict," he told a news conference in Warsaw on Saturday.

He said presidential powers should be limited, adding "the president should not have veto power."

President Lech Kaczynski earlier vetoed a number of government bills, including health and pensions reforms. His twin brother Jaroslaw, head of the opposition Law and Justice party, have also impeded Tusk's efforts to introduce the euro in the country.

"The presidential veto brings more harm than good," Tusk said, adding "we propose changes to the constitution so that the centre of power lies with the government."

Tusk also proposed that the parliament should choose the president.

He said the reforms could come into effect in spring, in time for a presidential election scheduled for October 2010, adding a referendum on the changes may be held in the country.

Tusk, who is also chairman of the center-right Civic Platform party, took office as Prime Minister in November 2007. His cabinet then won the vote of confidence in the Sejm, the lower house of the Polish parliament.
