Rubin drew 0:0 with Ukrainian champions Dynamo Kiev in a snowy Kazan on Tuesday evening and now need to beat Inter Milan in Italy to make the knockout stages of the Champions League.
A cagey first half saw few chances for either side. The best opportunites fell to Alexander Bukharov in the 33rd minute, when he just failed to get a toe to a vicious Alejandro Dominguez cross, and Dominguez himself just before the break with a spectacular overhead kick that the Dynamo goalkeeper did well to get down to.
Kiev came back into the match in the second half with Andriy Shevchenko always looking dangerous and Rubin losing key defender Roman Sharonov to injury.
Bukharov had an excellent chance to steal all three points for the Russian champions in injury time when he was put through clear on goal, but he was unable to take the opportunity, much to the dismay of Kazan trainer Kurban Berdyev.
Barcelona beat Milan 2-0 later on Tuesday and now top Group F with 8 points. Milan and Rubin both have 6 points, and equal goal differences. However, Milan have scored one more goal than the Russians and are in second place. Dynamo Kiev are bottom with 5 points.
Rubin travel to Milan for their final group fixture, while Barcelona visit Kiev.
