A Russian student who is in a Swiss jail after seriously injuring a man in a suspected drunk street race, has agreed to post bail of $100,000, Swiss agency ATS reported on Friday, citing his lawyer.
Jacques Barillon, acting for Ziya Babayev, 22, who crashed his Lamborghini into a pensioner's car in Geneva last week, said his client had agreed to the bail and pledged to cooperate with investigators, the agency reported.
The crash has sparked a media storm in Switzerland and Russia, with reports saying Babayev and three other Russians were racing at over 220 km an hour (about 150 miles an hour) under the influence of alcohol along Lake Geneva and fled the scene of the crash, leaving a 70-year-old Volkswagen driver seriously injured.
Babayev earlier admitted the accident, but denied there had been a race. Barillon also confirmed that the alcohol level in his client's blood was well over the limit.
The lawyer also said his client did not flee the scene, and was questioned by police on the spot before receiving medical treatment. Police in Geneva later confirmed this.
Russian media quoted Barillon as saying earlier this week that the story has been blown out of proportion because it features "expensive cars, millionaire parents and foreign passports."
Babayev is a son of Mekhradzh Babayev, the head of a construction firm in Russia. Two other cars, including a $1.9 million Bugatti Veyron, allegedly participating in the high-speed race were driven by the sons of multimillionaire Telman Ismailov.
Babayev was earlier reported to have been expelled from his university in Geneva because of the November 19 accident.
Babayev told police he hardly knew the other suspects, who confirmed his statement.
