Palekh is an ancient town in the Vladimir-Suzdal area, and one of Russia’s ancient art centers. It is located 64 km from the city of Ivanovo. The town has a community of 500 artists among its population of 6,400.

In the Soviet era, Nikolai Zinovyev, People’s Artist of the Soviet Union, studied the traditions of Palekh art. He developed a teaching methodology and wrote two books, Palekh Art and The Stylistic Traditions of Palekh Art. The latter contains 104 specially selected illustrations with captions.

Palekh artists have always painted a variety of items including brooches, barrels, jars, trunks, cases, boxes, notepads, paper cutters, cigarette cases, tobacco boxes, cigar cases, powder boxes, eye glass cases, glove cases, Easter eggs and jewelry boxes.
