Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who was hospitalized with a broken nose following an attack in Milan, is already feeling better, spokesman Paolo Bonaiuti said on Tuesday.

Berlusconi, 73, also had two teeth broken in the attack and remains in a hospital. A man hurled a souvenir statuette at the premier while he was greeting the crowd and signing autographs after a flamboyant speech in Milan.

The spokesman said that the attack would not affect Berlusconi's future appearances in public.

"He has spent his whole life working and to deprive him of opportunity to work means to take from him what he really loves," the spokesman said.

Doctors have advised Berlusconi to halt his duties for 10 days. A number of events with Berlusconi's participation have already been canceled in Italy and abroad.

The prime minister's personal doctor, Alberto Zangrillo, said he would stay in hospital for at least 24-36 hours.

The attacker, 42-year-old Massimo Tartaglia, has a long record of mental illness and is currently in a psychiatric ward in the San Vittore prison. He has sent the prime minister a letter apologizing for his "cowardly" attack.
