Eight people were killed and 40 injured when a car exploded in the fashionable northeast part of Afghanistan's capital Kabul, an Afghan radio station reported on Tuesday.
The car, driven by a suicide bomber, went off near the house of former Afghan vice president Ahmad Zia Massoud in Kabul's Wazir Akbar Khan area, where most western embassies are located, the Salam Watandar radio station quoted the country's Interior Ministry as saying.
Massoud's secretary was among the victims of the attack. The blast damaged several houses and cars parked close by.
Earlier reports said one person was killed and 16 injured in the blast.
Eyewitnesses said they saw a black off-road vehicle, which exploded close to a restaurant and hotel, which are often visited by foreigners.
