Christmas trees were prohibited in Russia by the Bolsheviks after the 1917 Revolution, but by the 1930s the tradition of decorating fir trees was revived, though this time in celebration of New Year’s instead of Christmas. Few families celebrate New Year’s without a fir tree.
In shops you can buy all sorts of holiday decorations, including in the shapes of birds, animals and flowers. However, the ball remains the traditional New Year’s decoration.
Glassblowers may make several hundred glass balls in one shift, but this doesn’t mean that they are easy to make. Consistently being able to make decorations without faults and of the same size requires years of training.
The factory also produces wooden boxes to hold its creations. The boxes are also hand-painted.
