Police in the Russian republic of Bashkortostan in the southern Urals have arrested a young local resident who was presenting roses to women in the street over charges of robbing a flower shop, a local police spokesman said.

The 19-year-old was detained in the republic's capital, Ufa, while handing round roses from a huge bunch, the spokesman said. Before starting his philanthropic action, the man reportedly sold a part of the bunch for 400 rubles (about $13.20), which he then spent on alcohol.

The spokesman said a criminal case was initiated against the gallant man, who is suspected in robbing some 100 roses estimated at 7,000 rubles (more than $230).

The suspect reportedly said he remembered nothing of what he was accused of, citing he was drunk at the time of his detention. However, he pledged to cover the loss to flower shop owners.
