Ukraine repaid $5.75 billion of its over $100 billion foreign debt in 2009, the country's prime minister said.
"This year we have a record repayment of the foreign debt, which was left from the previous governments," Yulia Tymoshenko said in an interview with Ukraina national television channel.
Tymoshenko added that she would never allow the foreign debt to amount to the sum, which could pose a threat to the country's financial system.
"I would never allow in my life for the country to have debts, which are incompatible with the normal functioning of the financial system," Tymoshenko said.
Tymoshenko is a registered candidate for the presidential election in Ukraine, slated for January 17.
