The Central, Vasilievsky Ostrov, and Petrograd districts were the first to be decorated, but artificial Christmas trees have appeared in other districts as well.

This year, the municipal advertising agency decided to use the northern lights as the city’s decoration theme. Imitations of this phenomenon, as well as snowflakes, fireworks and holiday greetings will decorate the streets of St. Petersburg.

The decoration of the city started in the beginning of November and was finished by December 10.

On that day, the city’s holiday lights were connected to the electric network and turned on.

Overall, there are 75 Christmas trees set up in St. Petersburg. Each one is 14 meters tall.

An ice bar has been built in front of the Grand Hotel Europe.

Celebrations started on December 14 with the launch of the Christmas Fair on Ostrovsky Square. The fair has become a traditional event in recent years.

The arrival of the senior Father Frost is scheduled for December 23. He will arrive at Senate Square as tradition dictates, where the governors of St. Petersburg and Vologda regions will give him a warm welcome.

Over 131,000 elementary schoolchildren have been invited to attend Christmas shows at the St. Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex to take place between December 25 and 30. The shows are sponsored by the Governor’s Office.
