Heavy snowfalls engulfed the U.S. East Coast on Saturday paralyzing traffic and cutting power supplies in the region.
Five people were killed in snowstorm-related accidents as more than 30 cm (1 ft) of snow fell in Washington and neighboring states.
The U.S. National Weather Service asked people not to travel and not to leave their homes if possible.
"If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you," the service said.
Washington's Reagan National Airport was shut down. Many airlines also cancelled their flights.
The snowstorm is moving north toward New York and Boston and is expected to reach Massachusetts on Sunday.
