Police in Russia's Far East have seized some 3.5 kg (about 7.8 lbs) from a passenger on board a train from Novosibirsk to Vladivostok, a spokesman for the local law enforcement bodies said on Friday.
"Police officers from the Obluchevsky district have confiscated from an unemployed suspect, born in 1976, some 3.5 kg of heroin as he was taking a passenger train en route from Novosibirsk to Vladivostok," the source said.
He added that the suspect was arrested and the police are currently questioning him as part of the launched investigation.
The director of Russia's state antidrug committee said last week that illicit drug flows into Russia, mainly from Afghanistan, have almost doubled in the past year. Viktor Ivanov said this has led to a rise in violence in Russia's North Caucasus.
