Five people, including a 9-year-old child, have died in a road crash in western Kazakhstan, the country's emergencies ministry reported on Sunday.
"A Volkswagen and a Volvo sedans collided on the Samara-Chimkent highway in the Western-Kazakhstan region on Saturday evening," the ministry said in a statement.
As a result, the driver and four passengers of the Volkswagen, including a 9-year-old child, died on site, the statement said.
Kazakhstan's traffic death rate has been on the rise in recent years, with surging car ownership and a lack of road maintenance.
According to a recent report from the World Bank, "half of the roads in the country's network need major maintenance or full rehabilitation."
