Heavy rains over the last two days have caused landslides in Rio de Janeiro and its suburbs, killing at least 10 people, Brazil's EFE news agency reported on Thursday.
Municipal authorities have issued landslide warnings to the residents of Rio de Janeiro and its outskirts, including the favelas, or slums, which are north and west of the country's largest city. The poor construction of buildings and makeshift housing in the favelas could lead to the greatest number of deaths from landslides.
Though Brazil is experiencing heavy rains on New Year's Eve, Copacabana beach will still be the venue for some 2 million people ringing in the New Year. The famous beach is not in the risk zone, local authorities said.
