The Greek authorities have detained a Togo-flagged cargo ship with 11 Russian crew members on board on suspicion of smuggling cigarettes, a Greek coast guard spokeswoman said.
"On Tuesday evening, the Togo-flagged Mitridat cargo ship was intercepted to the north of Euboea Island and searched," the spokeswoman said, adding "7,900 boxes containing 3.9 million contraband packs of cigarettes were discovered" on board the ship.
She said the vessel, owned by the Liberian company, Oceanic International Shipping C.O., headed from Egypt to the Bulgarian port of Varna.
The crew members are to be questioned by prosecutors, she added.
A spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Greece said no information on the incident have been provided to Russian diplomats.
