The trial of two Russian sailors accused of cigarette smuggling will begin in the Greek city of Chalkida on Thursday, a Russian consulate official told RIA Novosti.
On Tuesday, Greek authorities detained a Togo-flagged cargo ship which was reportedly carrying 7,900 boxes containing 3.9 million packs of cigarettes from the Egyptian port of Alexandria to the Bulgarian port of Varna.
A spokesman for the Greek prosecutor said the crew had failed to provide customhouse seals proving the legal origin of the cargo.
The 11-member Russian crew was detained on smuggling charges. The captain of the ship and the chief mechanic are to face trial.
