The Lithuanian capital's main streets will have no lighting if the city administration cannot agree a debt repayment schedule with the electric utility by January 15, a company spokeswoman said on Thursday.
The spokeswoman said the city's electricity debts totaled about 6 million litas ($2.5 million).
"We have repeatedly appealed to the authorities in Vilnius to pay the debt, but to no avail. We have warned City Hall that we are considering the possibility of turning off the lighting on the main streets due to the debt," she said.
The utility says the city-owned street lighting company owes 2.2 million litas, while the trolleybus firm owes 2 million litas. The spokeswoman said the city had proposed paying 700,000 litas of the street-lighting debt, and 400,000 for the trolleybuses.
The CEO of the company, which supplies electricity to the Vilnius, Panevezys, Alytus, Utena regions, as well as parts of the Kaunas and Marijampole districts, is due to meet with the deputy mayor on Friday.
