Lithuanian prosecutors should launch an investigation into secret CIA prisons on the country's territory without the parliamentary approval, the country's president has said.

"They [prosecutors] were recommended to investigate possible abuse of office," Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite told the country's parliament on Wednesday.

ABC News reported in mid-August that Lithuania, along with Poland and Romania, had a secret CIA prison on its territory, where suspected al-Qaeda terrorists were secretly kept and interrogated. It later said the prison was probably located on the territory of an exclusive horse riding school near Vilnius.

In late 2009, Lithuania's parliamentary commission for security and defense launched an investigation into the reports. Although the commission failed to give a definitive answer on whether prisoners were kept in such detention facilities, the lawmakers said several buildings were available for the purpose.

In addition, it said, several CIA airplanes landed in the country for unknown purposes without customs or border control in 2005-2006.

The commission recommended an inquiry into a possible abuse of office by three top security officials, who controlled the situation with the airliners.
