UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said he asked the Security Council on Monday to beef up the peacekeeping contingent in quake-hit Haiti by 1,500 policemen and 2,000 troops.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said he asked the Security Council on Monday to beef up the peacekeeping contingent in quake-hit Haiti by 1,500 policemen and 2,000 troops.

The proposal to increase the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), which currently enlists over 9,000 policemen and troops, comes among increased reports of looting of stores and other buildings as well as other acts of crime mainly in the devastated Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

UN sources said a resolution on beefing up the contingent by 60% policemen and by 30% troops might be passed by the Security Council as soon as Tuesday.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti last Tuesday and almost leveled the country's capital. A number of aftershocks followed.

Tens of thousands of people are feared dead, twice as many could be injured, and more than 3 million are estimated to have been left without shelter as international rescue and search efforts on the island are ongoing.

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said that the latest confirmed death toll among the organizations personnel was 46, including the head of the UN mission to Haiti, Hedi Annabi, and his deputy, Luiz Carlos da Costa.
