Police in Russia's Leningrad Region have detained a pregnant woman whose son died in hospital after she punished him for eating honey without permission, the local prosecutor's office said.
The 3-year-old boy was taken to a St. Petersburg hospital on January 8 with multiple injuries and later died.
According to investigators, the day before the boy ate some honey without his mother's permission.
"She made him eat the remaining honey and stand in the corner and did not allow him to use the toilet," the prosecutor's press service said on Tuesday. "When he wet himself, the mother became angry with him, grabbed his neck and started hitting the boy's head on the floor."
The mother, Svetlana Artyushina, an alcoholic who is seven months pregnant, also sat the toddler in a bathtub filled with cold water.
Her neighbor, a mother of three children, later joined in, making the boy climb on a chair and jump down until he fell down and could not get up any more.
Artyushina faces up to 15 years in prison.
